Smith Rock climber injured in 20-foot fall

A Sherwood man was injured in a 20-foot fall in the Red Wall climbing area at Smith Rock State Park on Sunday evening, according to the Deschutes County Sheriff’s Office.

Deschutes County 911 received a report about 5:10 p.m. that a rock climber had fallen about 20 feet in the Red Wall climbing area and sustained possible serious injuries to his back and right shoulder, according to a news release.

Four Deschutes County Search and Rescue volunteers responded and hiked about a mile up the Misery Ridge Trail, where they found the climber, Theodore Wogan, 22.

Wogan was evaluated, stabilized and secured in a wheeled litter and taken to a Redmond Fire & Rescue unit waiting near the foot bridge, according to the news release. He was transported to St. Charles Redmond for treatment. Officials at the hospital could not be reached for an update on Wogan’s status Monday evening.
