Top-seeded Bulldogs win CBC tournament opener

ATHENA — Top-seeded Culver advanced to the championship round of the Columbia Basin Conference volleyball tournament Friday night with a 25-10, 25-16, 25-10 sweep over Pilot Rock at Weston-McEwen High School.
Culver takes on Heppner today at 4 p.m. for the CBC’s No. 1 seed in the Class 2A state tournament.
The Bulldogs were led by Shealene Little with 23 kills, two aces and eight digs. Jenny Vega had five kills, Lynze Schonneker had 11 digs and three aces, Andrea Retano had four aces, and Margie Beeler recorded 31 assists.

Culver frosh shine at district: PENDLETON — Culver freshmen Emma Knepp and Hannah Orey posted top-20 finishes in a field of 73 girls at the Class 3A/2A/1A Special District 5 meet. Knepp covered the 5,000-meter course at McKay Park in a time of 22 minutes, 3.5 seconds to finish 19th, and Orey was right behind in 22:05.2. The Bulldog girls finished seventh in the seven-team meet with 158 points; Union was first with 43 points. Carlos Martinez placed 28th in 19:26.0 to lead the Culver boys, who did not field a complete team. Union won the boys team championship with 33 points.
