Weston-McEwen 30, Culver 0: Bulldogs doomed by turnovers

ATHENA — Shea Little noted the lengthy trip to Weston-McEwen, some 230 miles and perhaps more than four hours spent on the bus.

But the Culver football coach conceded that there were no excuses for the Bulldogs’ performance on Friday night.

In committing 11 turnovers, Culver’s hopes of reaching the Class 2A state playoffs will have to wait another week as the Bulldogs fell 30-0 to the TigerScots in Columbia Basin Conference play.

“We shot ourselves in the foot,” Little said. “It was just a mental breakdown. We did not show up. We did not get off the bus.”

Culver, described by Weston-McEwen coaches as the hardest hitting team the TigerScots (4-0 CBC, 6-2 overall) had seen this season, according to Little, still has the possibility of reaching the state playoffs for the first time since 2010 as they host Stanfield next Friday. The Bulldogs are currently in third place in the CBC with a 2-2 league record and a 6-2 overall mark. Stanfield, which played Pilot Rock on Thursday night, was 1-2 in CBC play and 2-5 overall heading into that contest.

“There hasn’t been a lot of success in Culver football,” Little said. “If we could pull this off, it’s going to be huge. For these seniors, for the school, for the community, to get into the playoffs — there would be huge excitement from everyone.”
