Linfield, Southern advance

McMINNVILLE — Sophomore quarterback Sam Riddle threw for four touchdowns and ran for another, and No. 10 Linfield used a dominant first half to defeat No. 17 Chapman 55-24 in the first round of the NCAA Division III playoffs Saturday.

The Wildcats (9-1) led 35-3 at halftime after a 1-yard Riddle TD run, TD passes to Charlie Poppen and Evan Peterson, a 6-yard TD run from Spencer Payne and a 63-yard punt return from Jordan Giza.

Poppen and Peterson each finished with two TDs against Chapman (8-1), the champions of the Southern California conference from Orange, California.

The Wildcats will play either Texas Lutheran or Mary Hardin-Baylor in the second round.

Also on Saturday:

Southern Oregon 44, MidAmerica Nazarene 26: The No. 8 Raiders scored 17 straight points in the fourth quarter to pull away for a first-round NAIA playoff victory. Austin Dodge threw for 311 yards and three TDs and ran for another score on the ground to lead the Raiders (10-2).
