Gut takes super-G, Vonn second — Lara Gut of Switzerland won the women’s World Cup super-G Sunday at Lake Louise, Alberta, with Lindsey Vonn finishing second. Gut was timed in 1 minute, 18.46 seconds. Vonn was 0.37 seconds behind and Tina Maze of Slovenia was third, 0.81 seconds behind the winner. Bend’s Laurenne Ross finished 24th in 1:20.57, one day after finishing Saturday’s downhill race sixth.
Ligety wins Beaver Creek giant slalom — American Ted Ligety used a powerful second run to win a World Cup giant slalom Sunday despite a broken wrist. In fourth place after the opening run, Ligety found speed where others couldn’t on a deteriorating course. He finished in a combined time of 2 minutes, 34.07 seconds. Alexis Pinturault of France was second, 0.18 seconds behind, and Austria’s Marcel Hirscher ended up third.

5 WRs set at short-course worlds on last day — Five more world records were broken at the short-course world championships on Sunday in Doa, with Sarah Sjostrom of Sweden setting two on the final day. The total number of world records at the Hamad Aquatic Centre in Doha, Qatar, ended at 23, way ahead of the 17 set at the 2008 worlds in Manchester. Sjostrom dominated her events in the 25-meter pool on the final day, setting records in winning the 100-meter butterfly and 200 freestyle finals. Etiene Medeiros of Brazil became the fastest woman to swim the 50 backstroke, Markus Deibler set a new mark in winning the 100 medley and the Netherlands broke the record in the women’s 4×50 freestyle.
