Her stepdaughter Nicole Saunders and other family members spoke at the sentencing, providing emotional accounts of what her brother called a “30-year” cycle of abuse, including allegations of abuse of other children.

Spectators in the courtroom wept and clapped after Nicole Saunders read a statement to the court. The 19-year-old moved to live with her stepmother when she was 13. Deputy District Attorney Evander Mciver said in a statement during sentencing that Michelle Saunders withheld food from the girl, strangled her with a belt, held a knife up to her throat and struck her in the face, among other acts of cruelty and deprivation.

“I’m not afraid of you anymore,” said Nicole Saunders, addressing her stepmother. “I’m afraid you won’t change.”
