Mountain View boys win division at basketball tournament

Davis Holly hit eight 3-pointers and scored 29 points to lead Mountain View to a 64-57 boys basketball win over Lebanon in the championship game of the Les Schwab Oregon Holiday Hoopfest’s Mountain Division Monday at Mountain View High.

Holly hit 8 of 13 3-point attempts and helped spur the Cougars’ dominant third quarter, which proved to be the difference in the game.

With the score tied 26-26 at halftime, Mountain View exploded for 19 points in the third quarter and held the Warriors to just 10.

Ments Haugen added 16 points on 6-for-11 shooting and dished out six assists. As a team the Cougars (8-2) hit 25 of 56 shots, had 15 assists and forced 16 Lebanon turnovers.

Boys basketball

Summit 69, Marist 63: Max Michalski scored a game-high 20 points, and Cam McCormick added a double-double with 10 points and 11 rebounds to help the Storm win the Summit Division in their own gym at the Les Schwab Oregon Holiday Hoopfest. Jack Hurley tossed in 12 points and dished out seven assists in the win for the Storm (8-1).

Bend 72, Sandy 60: The Lava Bears hit 10 3-pointers, including six in the first quarter, to put away Sandy at the Les Schwab Oregon Holiday Hoopfest at Mountain View. J.J. Spitler sank six 3-pointers on his way to a game-high 30 points for Bend (4-4), and Christian Johnson finished with 16 points, as the Bears jumped to a 29-17 first-quarter lead and never looked back.

Pendleton 53, Redmond 42: WILSONVILLE — The Panthers cut a 20-point fourth-quarter deficit to eight with a minute to play, but it was not enough to overcome the Buckaroos at the Wilsonville Invitational. Cody Moss logged 21 points for Redmond (1-7), Brandon Benson had 11 points, but the Panthers missed their first 15 shot attempts of the game and were held scoreless for nearly 12 minutes.

Coeur d’Alene (Idaho) 70, Ridgeview 65: COEUR D’ALENE, Idaho — The Ravens slipped to 7-2 with an overtime loss at the North Idaho Tournament. George Mendazona logged 21 points for Ridgeview, and Tanner O’Neal finished with 19 points. But Coeur d’Alene outscored the Ravens 19-8 in the fourth quarter to force overtime and bested Ridgeview 14-9 in the extra period for the win.

Crook County 50, Junction City 44: COOS BAY — Down 11-0 in the first quarter, Crook County roared back to defeat Junction City in the opening round of the three-day Les Schwab Holiday Tournament at Marshfield High School. Blake Bartels hit three 3-pointers on his way to a game-high 19 points, and Seth Kessi added 12 points for the Cowboys (3-6).

Sisters 63, Illinois Valley 32: SISTERS — Keegan Greaney totaled 12 points and three assists, and the Outlaws ran away with a win at the Sisters Holiday Tournament. Connor Schaab had 11 points for Sisters (5-3), Steen Johnson logged seven points and five assists, and Isaac Mackenzie finished with eight points and six rebounds.

Scappoose 64, Madras 51: SISTERS — The White Buffaloes were outrebounded by 11 boards and shot just 30 percent from the field, including a 2-of-17 mark from 3-point range, in a loss at the Sisters Holiday Tournament. Jered Pichette paced Madras (5-2) with a game-high 21 points, while Voshaun Bryant contributed with nine points.

La Pine 51, Gervais 50: GERVAIS — Taylor Brown hit a game-winning 3-pointer in the final seconds of the game to help the Hawks knock off the Cougars in the first round of the Gervais Tournament. Tyress Turnsplenty scored a team-high 19 points for La Pine (5-4) and Anthony Heal added 13. Brown contributed 12 points, including the final 3-pointer of the night.

Girls basketball

Summit 41, Marist 39: The Storm trailed by three points heading into the fourth quarter, but Summit hit 9 of 10 free throws in the final period, including two by Sarah Reeves with 3.4 seconds left, to secure the championship at the Les Schwab Oregon Holiday Hoopfest at Summit. Reeves finished with 11 points, 10 rebounds and two steals for the Storm (8-2), and Megan Cornett chipped in with 11 points. Kelsey Norby had eight points and six boards in what Summit coach Ryan Cruz described as a “true team victory with the best scoring balance we have had all season.”

Willamette 44, Bend 27: The Wolverines from Eugene, who won the past two Class 5A state championships before moving to 6A this season, staked a 15-8 first-quarter lead, which swelled to a 12-point margin at the half, en route to a Les Schwab Oregon Holiday Hoopfest win at Bend High. Sophia Jackson paced the Lava Bears (4-5) with nine points, and Alexa Evert chipped in with eight points.

Seaside 46, Madras 44: SISTERS — A little more than a week after falling to No. 5 Seaside by 21 points, the White Buffaloes rallied in the fourth quarter, outscoring the Seagulls 18-6 in the final period, but came up short on the first day of the Sisters Holiday Tournament. Lynden Harry posted 15 points for Madras (4-3), and Mariah Stacona chipped in with 13 points. Buffs coach Zach Lillebo noted the great defense his squad played, adding, “They proved they could play with a top-five team in the state.”

Myrtle Point 44, Crook County 30: COOS BAY — The Cowgirls dropped their opener in the three-day Les Schwab Holiday Tournament at Marshfield High School. Chelsea Thomas and Kimmer Severance scored 10 points apiece for Crook County; Thomas also grabbed a team-high nine rebounds, and Severance had four steals and three assists.

La Pine 36, Gervais 16: GERVAIS — La Pine outscored Gervais 11-0 in the second quarter to break it open and rolled to victory on the first day of the Gervais Tournament. Alexis Roes had six rebounds and five steals to go with her game-high 11 points for the Hawks (7-2). Olivia Ramirez had nine rebounds and eight steals, and Riley Mickel had six points, six assists, six rebounds and four steals for the winners.

Wrestling

Bears 2-2 on first day of NW Duals: BEAVERTON — Justin Vinton went 4-0 at 170 pounds and Sage Farnworth was 3-1 at 138 during the first day of the NW Duals at Westview High School, helping Bend High go 2-2 on the day. The Lava Bears topped Scappoose 35-28 and Century 39-18 but fell to McMinnville 41-29 and Hillsboro 56-18. Bend concludes pool-play competition today before moving on to bracket matches. Lava Bears coach Luke Larwin also pointed out the wrestling of freshman Maito Millar-Sanches, who went 2-2 at 126 pounds.

Bulldogs 6th at classic: VESTAVIA HILLS, Ala. — With Kyle Easterly leading the way, Culver wrapped up the first day of the Heart of Dixie Wrestling Classic in sixth place with 364 points. Host Vestavia Hills sits atop the 14-team field with 520 points. Easterly, competing at 170 pounds, went 5-0 on the first day with four falls in pool play. Tucker Davis (138) and Clay McClure (160) each went 4-1 in pool matches with Davis logging four pins and McClure finishing with three falls. The Bulldogs enter the final day with 12 wrestlers in championship brackets.
