Ducks complete sweep of New Mexico State — Starting pitcher Jack Karracker allowed just one run over seven innings Sunday, and Oregon scored four runs in the second inning en route to a 6-3 win over New Mexico State as the Ducks (7-1) wrapped up a sweep of the four-game nonconference series in Eugene. Nick Catalano’s RBI double ignited Oregon’s big second inning, during which the Ducks batted around to take a 4-1 lead. Karracker (1-0) surrendered five hits, struck out eight and walked none.
Beavers win big in Arizona finale — Oregon State scored seven runs in the first inning Sunday and ran away with a 15-5 victory over Kansas as the Beavers finished 5-3 in their season-opening eight-game set in Surprise, Arizona. Freshman K.J. Harrison continued his torrid start to the season, belting a grand slam in the fifth inning and driving in five runs to give him 13 RBIs for the season. Harrison, has now hit safely in all eight of Oregon State’s games and leads the team with 15 hits and four home runs.
Softball
Beavers walk off past Nebraska — C.J. Chirichingo scored on a fielder’s-choice grounder by Makele Manewa in the bottom of the seventh inning, giving Oregon State an 11-10 win over Nebraska on Sunday’s final day of the Mary Nutter Classic in Palm Springs, California. The Beavers (11-5) led 10-4 after Sammi Noland smacked a three-run homer in the sixth, but the Huskers countered with six runs in the seventh to tie. Chirichingo, who was 3-for-4 for the game, ignited the winning rally with a single to lead off the seventh.

Ferrer wins 2nd tournament of season — David Ferrer won his second tournament of the season and the 23rd ATP singles title of his career, beating Fabio Fognini on Sunday 6-2, 6-3 in the final of the Rio Open. Ferrer also won the Qatar Open in Doha.
Errani wins 8th WTA singles title — Top-seeded Sara Errani of Italy defeated Anna Schmiedlova of Slovakia 7-6 (2), 6-1 on Sunday to win the Rio Open. It was Errani’s eighth ATP singles title, and her first since winning two years ago in Acapulco, Mexico.
Karlovic wins Delray Beach Open — Ivo Karlovic won the Delray Beach Open in Florida on Sunday to become the oldest champion in the 23-year history of the tournament, beating surprise finalist Donald Young 6-3, 6-3. Six days shy of his 36th birthday, the fourth-seeded Karlovic won his sixth ATP Tour title.
Simon takes Open 13 — Fifth-seeded Gilles Simon claimed his 12th career title after coming out on top of a tense three-set battle with fellow Frenchman Gael Monfils in the Open 13 final on Sunday in Marseille, France. Simon withstood 11 aces and five breaks of serve before he proved the strongest in the tiebreak to win 6-4, 1-6, 7-6 (4).
SKIING
Shiffrin wins slalom to top standings — Mikaela Shiffrin held on to a big first-run lead in Slovenia to earn her 12th career slalom victory Sunday, taking sole possession of the women’s World Cup record for most wins in the discipline by a teenager. The American, who turns 20 next month, had previously shared the record with France’s Perrine Pelen, who set it in the 1980s. Shiffrin overtook Sweden’s Frida Handotter, who finished ninth, atop the season’s slalom standings.
Mayer wins super-G for weekend sweep — Olympic downhill champion Matthias Mayer won a super-G on Sunday for his second victory in two days, mastering a technical and tricky home course in Austria amid thick snowfall. It was the first super-G win for Mayer, adding to his two World Cup downhill victories, the second of which came Saturday.
