Apple to be added to the Dow index
Apple, the highest-valued company in the world, will be added to the Dow Jones industrial average next month in yet another sign of how popular the computer giant has become for investors.
Apple, a top investment holding for risky hedge funds as well as retirees, will replace the telecommunications company AT&T, a technology standard-bearer in its day, on March 19, S&P Dow Jones Indices said in an announcement Friday.
Nissan expands recall of Altimas
Nissan is expanding an earlier recall of its popular Altima sedans to fix a flaw that can cause the hood to fly open while the car is being driven.
The Japanese automaker now says 625,000 Altimas built in the U.S. from the 2013 through 2015 model years are affected by the problem. Nissan initially recalled 220,000 cars from the 2013 model year in October for the same problem.
The recall also affects 15,000 vehicles in Canada.
Nissan has issued the recalls to fix a secondary hood latch, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. If the secondary latch fails and the primary latch is released, “the hood could unexpectedly open while driving, increasing the risk of a vehicle crash,” NHTSA said.
Intuit receives tax fraud inquiries
Intuit, the maker of TurboTax, said Friday that federal authorities from the Department of Justice and other government agencies have asked the company for more information after a surge in tax fraud hit users of the popular do-it-yourself tax preparation software.
In addition to a formal request for information from the Department of Justice, the largest online tax preparation company said it has been in touch with Congress and the Federal Trade Commission. The Mountain View, California, company said it had expected the inquiries and would cooperate with the authorities.
