RUGBY

COCC drubs OIT — Alex Esselstrom scored three tries for a game-high 15 points, leading Central Oregon Community College to a 32-7 home win Saturday over Oregon Institute of Technology. Travis Skyles, Ryan Davis and Levi Penter each scored a try for the Bobcats (9-3), and Austin Todd added a two-point conversion. COCC now enters a four-team playoff for the Northwest Cup; the Bobcats’ next game will be against the University of Puget Sound on a date to be determined.

Bend Blues notch road win — Michael Hageman scored four tries Saturday to lead the Bend Blues to a 44-22 Rugby Oregon Club Championship Division win over the Camas Warriors in Camas, Washington. Isaiah Felton scored two tries, Austin Rainey and Tanner Russel added one apiece, and Keegan Bloss scored two conversions for the Blues, whose record improved to 3-2. The Blues play again this Saturday in Bend against Polk County. Game time at Pilot Butte Middle School is 11 a.m.

Baseball

Oregon swept by Michigan State — A four-run first inning propelled Michigan State to a 7-4 win and a three-game sweep over Oregon Sunday in a nonconference game in Eugene. Oregon starter David Peterson picked up the loss as he threw six innings, giving up 11 hits and seven earned runs with seven strikeouts. Jakob Goldfarb had three of Oregon’s 13 hits, while Mitchell Tolman, Phil Craig-St. Louis and Nick Catalano each had two hits. Scott Heineman drove in three runs.

Hall of Fame Giants broadcaster Simmons dies — Lon Simmons, a Hall of Fame broadcaster whose career spanned five decades calling San Francisco Giants, Oakland Athletics and 49ers games, died Sunday. He was 91. Simmons was one of the original voices of the Giants when they moved West in 1958, and he covered Hall of Famers Willie Mays and Willie McCovey, Juan Marichal, Gaylord Perry and Orlando Cepeda.

Softball

Ducks shut out Bruins — Home runs by Koral Costa and Lauren Lindvall, as well as a shutout by pitcher Cheridan Hawkins, helped lead Oregon to a 10-0 Pac-12 win over UCLA in five innings in Los Angeles on Sunday. Hawkins gave up two hits and three walks while recording six strikeouts for the Ducks (10-2 Pac-12, 32-5 overall) as she pushed her record to 16-3. Costa and Lindvall each had four RBIs, while Jenna Lilley and Geri Ann Glasco had two hits apiece.

Tennis

Djokovic wins 5th Key Biscayne title — Novak Djokovic earned his fifth Key Biscayne title Sunday, beating Andy Murray for the seventh straight time and showing superior stamina in the heat to win the Miami Open final 7-6 (3), 4-6, 6-0. The top-ranked Djokovic became the first man to complete the Indian Wells-Key Biscayne spring sweep three times.
