Storm kick off invitational with pair of victories

Chandler Oliveira and Carter Quigley each went 2-0 in singles play Friday, helping Summit to a 2-0 boys tennis record at the Summit Invite at the Athletic Club of Bend.

The Storm, Bend High and Mountain View, as well as Ashland and Eugene’s Churchill and Marist, kicked off the two-day tourney Friday.

The tandem of Andy Jones and Jonathan Wimberly improved to 9-0 with back-to-back wins for the Storm, who defeated Churchill 8-0 and Marist 6-2.

Bend, which fell to Marist 6-2 and to Churchill on sets (7-6), was highlighted by a pair of doubles teams. The No. 2 tandem of Max Farrens and Will Ainsworth and the No. 4 squad of Jesse Hindson and Krishon Chopra each booked victories against Marist, and Jasper Ladkin recorded the Bears’ lone singles win of the day with an 8-5 decision against Churchill.

Mountain View, which lost 8-0 against Ashland, was highlighted by Connor Davenport, who suffered a 9-7 setback at No. 4 singles.

Storm top field at Juniper: REDMOND — Jack Loberg claimed medalist honors with a 3-under-par 69 to lead a 1-2-3 finish for Summit, which posted a score of 289 to win the Panther Invitational at Juniper Golf Course. Bend, which was second with a 300, was paced by Max McGee and Jack Klar, who tied for fourth with a 73. Mountain View’s Mason Krieger and Ridgeview’s Jacob Kinzer tied for 12th with an 84, and Redmond’s Jordan Christiansen carded an 89.

Softball

Ridgeview 4, Bend 1: Ridgeview, ranked No. 1 in Class 5A, improved to 3-0 in league play and 9-1 overall with an Intermountain Conference road win. Ridgeview’s Katie Salka had two hits and two RBIs, while Brook Herrington hit a solo home run in the fourth inning and scored three times. Bend (0-1 IMC, 5-6 overall) was led by Jourdan Andrews, who had an RBI single.

Redmond 10, Summit 6: Redmond capatalized on eight Summit errors to claim an Intermountain conference win. The Panthers (1-2 IMC, 3-8 overall) were led by Madison Edwards and Kaila Fierstos, who were both 2-for-3 with three RBIs. Alex Popp had two hits, including a double, for the Storm (0-3, 5-6), and Hailey Nelson had two hits.

Mountain View 11, La Pine 5: LA PINE — The Cougars picked up their third straight win in a nonconference matchup. Mountain View (6-5) was led by Jensen Logan, the winning pitcher, who also had two hits and three RBIs. McKenzie Walsworth paced La Pine (3-7) with two doubles and an RBI.

Sweet Home 16, Sisters 0: SISTERS — Defense let the Outlaws down, as they committed 11 errors in the five-inning Sky-Em League defeat. Cassidy Ling-Scott and Amanda Smith each had a single to account for all of the offense for the Outlaws (0-3 Sky-Em, 2-10 overall).

Baseball

Summit 9, Redmond 4: Colby Scott pitched a solid six innings and Summit got some timely hitting to run its record to 11-0 with the Intermountain Conference home win. Scott allowed seven hits and two earned runs to earn the victory. Jason Garcia and Troy Viola both had two hits and two RBIs for the Storm (3-0 IMC), which led 8-0 after three innings. For Redmond (2-1, 6-4) Hayden Smith had a double and two singles, and Clayton Aas hit a two-run triple in the Panthers’ three-run fourth inning.

Bend 2, Ridgeview 1: Lava Bears pitcher Kota Carter struck out 11 and gave up one unearned run in seven innings of an Intermountain Conference win. Elliot Willy drove in a run in the first inning and scored the go-ahead run in the fifth for No. 2 Bend (1-0 IMC, 8-3 overall). George Mendazona pitched six innings for the Ravens (0-3, 3-10), striking out nine while going 3-for-3 at the plate and scoring the lone Ridgeview run.

Hood River Valley 10, Mountain View 0: HOOD RIVER — The Cougars were checked on one hit in the nonconference road setback. Hood River Valley dispatched Mountain View (3-6 overall) in five innings in the Cougars’ fifth consecutive loss.

Sisters 12, Sweet Home 5: SWEET HOME — The visiting Outlaws broke open a close Sky-Em League game with an eight-run fifth inning that featured eight hits, including a two-run double by Ryan Funk. Justin Harrer was 2-for-2 with three RBIs, and Alex Olivier and Zach Morgan also had two hits apiece for the Outlaws (2-1 Sky-Em, 9-2 overall). Morgan also was the winning pitcher, allowing five runs on seven hits with six strikeouts over five innings.

Boys lacrosse

Bend 9, Wilsonville 3: WILSONVILLE — Undefeated Bend outscored Wilsonville 6-0 in the fourth quarter to claim the nonleague victory. Cole Johnston scored three goals and Eli Pite had two goals and three assists for the visiting Lava Bears, who broke it open during a hard second-half rain. Chance Beutler added two goals and an assist for Bend, and Cade Hinderlider and Dominick Adams had a goal apiece for the winners (7-0). The Lava Bears defense was anchored by goalie Nikos Skoufos, who made eight saves.

Ridgeview 22, Redmond 2: REDMOND — Ridgeview outplayed Redmond in a crosstown High Desert Conference matchup. The host Panthers (0-4 HDC) were led by Cameron Robison, who scored both goals. Ridgeview improved to 1-2 in league play and 2-2 overall.

Lake Oswego 10, Summit 8: LAKE OSWEGO — Nick Rasmussen had three goals, but the Storm dropped the nonleague matchup to fall to 6-2. Charlier Stuermer scored once and dished out four assists for Summit, while Brint MacDonald and Stu Bledsoe each scored two goals.
