BASEBALL
Beavers take series from Arizona — Travis Eckert scattered five hits and two runs over 71⁄3 innings, and Oregon State took two out of three games in its series against Arizona with a 5-3 win Sunday in Corvallis. Eckert (4-0) struck out four. Michael Howard had a solo home run for the Beavers (25-12 overall, 8-7 Pac-12), and KJ Harrison had three RBIs. Bobby Dalbec (2-4) hit a home run for Arizona (24-13, 9-9).
Ducks held at bay by Southern Cal — Jakob Goldfarb hit a lead-off home run for Oregon, but Southern California responded with two runs in the bottom of the first and held on to win 7-3 in Los Angeles. The Trojans (29-10 overall, 10-5 Pac-12) took two of three games from the Ducks (23-18, 5-10). Oregon starter Conor Harber (3-2) lasted just one-plus innings, allowing three runs on two hits and two walks. Nick Catalano had a two-run single in the seventh to make it 4-3 before the Trojans responded again with two runs in the bottom of the inning.
SOFTBALL
Big bats lead Ducks over Stanford — Oregon sophomore Nikki Udria hit her first career grand slam, Janelle Lindvall had four RBIs and the Ducks beat Stanford 12-8 on Sunday in Stanford, California. It was the ninth straight win over the Cardinal for the Ducks (37-5 overall, 15-2 Pac-12) and seventh straight win overall. Starter Geri Ann Glasco walked the first four batters she faced before being pulled in favor of Karissa Hovinga (10-1), who struck out six in seven innings. Erin Ashby hit a grand slam and had five RBIs for the Cardinal (16-28, 1-13).
Late errors lead to Beavers loss — Oregon State committed two errors in the bottom of the seventh inning leading to an Arizona State run in a 4-3 loss Sunday in Tempe, Arizona. Breona Peralta, pinch running after the Sun Devils (29-16 overall, 7-7 Pac-12) led the inning off with a single, advanced to second on an error by Beavers pitcher Taylor Cotton (1-5) and scored on a throwing error by second baseman Mikela Manewa. Dani Gilmore and Hannah Akamine each had three hits for the Beavers (24-19, 5-13), who have lost eight of their past nine games.
TENNIS
U.S. falls to Italy in Fed Cup — Top-ranked Serena Williams fought back from a set down to win her windy singles match over Sara Errani but could not produce another victory Sunday in the decisive doubles encounter as Italy beat the United States 3-2 in a Fed Cup World Group playoff in Brindisi, Italy. Flavia Pennetta and Errani defeated Williams and Alison Riske 6-0, 6-3. Italy returns to the World Group and can compete for the Fed Cup trophy next year while the U.S. is relegated to World Group II.
Djokovic wins Monte Carlo Masters — Top-ranked Novak Djokovic won the Monte Carlo Masters for the second time in three years by defeating sixth-seeded Tomas Berdych 7-5, 4-6, 6-3 on Sunday in Monaco. Djokovic, who has lost only two matches in 2015, became the first player in history to win the first three Masters tournaments of the year after completing the Indian Wells-Miami sweep this spring.
Pereira wins Claro Open Colsanitas — Brazil’s Teliana Pereira won the Claro Open Colsanitas on Sunday in Bogota, Colombia, to become the WTA Tour’s first Brazilian winner in 27 years, beating fifth-seeded Yaroslava Shvedova of Kazakhstan 7-6 (2), 6-1. The 26-year-old Pereira is the first Brazilian woman to win on tour since Neige Dias in Barcelona in April 1988.
CYCLING
Marcotte wins U.S. Criterium championship— Eric Marcotte added the U.S. Criterium championship to his road national title Saturday, and Kendall Ryan dodged a last-lap crash to capture the women’s cycling championship. Riding for Team SmartStop, Marcotte made his decisive move entering the final corner of the mile-long circuit in downtown Greenville, South Carolina. Marcotte, a chiropractor from Scottsdale, Arizona, won the road title in October and two stages in last summer’s Cascade Cycling Classic.
