A Bend skier died on Mt. Bachelor after losing control and striking a tree Thursday afternoon.

The victim, Peter Sky, 29, was “an avid and accomplished skier,” according to a news release from the Deschutes County Sheriff’s Office. Sky had been skiing with a friend around 1 p.m. when he went out of control on the Leeway ski run and hit the tree. He was wearing appropriate gear, including a helmet, according to the sheriff’s office.

Sky was given lifesaving measures by people at the scene and Mt. Bachelor Ski Patrol. The ski patrol transported Sky down the mountain, where they were met by Bend Fire Department medics, who took over treatment without success.

Sky is survived by his wife, Marissa Sky, and a 15-year-old daughter, according to the sheriff’s office.
