SOFTBALL

Beavs close out Pac-12 slate with loss — Lovie Lopez hit a bases-clearing triple in the top of the sixth inning to bring Oregon State within two runs of Washington, but the Huskies scored four runs in the bottom of the inning to hand the Beavers a 17-11 loss Monday night in Seattle. Dani Gilmore and Sammi Noland hit home runs for the Beavers (26-25 overall, 6-18 Pac-12), who played their final Pac-12 series of the season. Starter Bev Miller (15-13) allowed 13 runs — nine earned — on 11 hits and six walks in 41⁄3 innings. Casey Stangel had five RBIs for Washington (39-14, 10-10).

BASEBALL

Counsell replaces Roenicke with Brewers — Former Milwaukee infielder Craig Counsell was hired Monday to manage the Brewers, about 12 hours after the team fired Ron Roenicke. A major league-worst 8-18, the Brewers lost 40 of their final 56 games under Roenicke. Counsell, 44, has no previous managing or coaching experience. He got his start in pro baseball in Central Oregon. A member of the expansion Colorado Rockies’ first amateur draft class, Counsell was assigned to the first-year Bend Rockies of the Class A short-season Northwest League for the 1992 season. In Bend that summer, Counsell played in 18 games as a middle infielder.

SKIING

Italian resort to host 2021 worlds — The Italian ski resort of Cortina d’Ampezzo is set to host the alpine world championships again after four successive losing bids. The International Ski Federation said Monday that Cortina was the only applicant to host the biennial Alpine worlds in 2021. Cortina, which stages speed races on the women’s World Cup calendar each season, was previously a candidate to host each world championships from 2013 to 2019. Cortina also hosted the Alpine worlds in 1932 and 1941, plus the 1956 Winter Olympics where Alpine events doubled as world title races.

SOCCER

U.S. taps Guatemala for Gold Cup warmup — The United States will play Guatemala in an exhibition July 3 at Nashville, Tennessee, the Americans’ last game before opening the defense of their CONCACAF Gold Cup title. They also have upcoming exhibitions at the Netherlands on June 5 and at Germany five days later. The latest addition to the schedule was announced Monday. The Americans open the Gold Cup, the North American championship, against Honduras on July 7 at Frisco, Texas.
