Northwest earthquake — The Pacific Northwest Seismic Network said two small earthquakes have been recorded in the Northwest, one in northern Oregon and the other in north-central Washington. No damage was reported from either. A magnitude-3.0 quake was recorded at 3:42 p.m. Friday in northern Oregon, about 27 miles south of The Dalles and near the Oregon-Washington border. Only two people logged on to the U.S. Geological Survey’s National Earthquake Information Center website to report feeling the quake. Fourteen people reported feeling a magnitude-2.5 quake recorded at 5:27 p.m. Friday and centered about six miles north of Entiat in Washington.
Amber alert arrest — Authorities in Tillamook County said a woman has been arrested after abducting the 3-year-old daughter she’d lost custody of. Police said 19-year-old Kaitlyne M. Wirth was taken into custody Friday morning. The child was taken from a home Thursday in North Bend. An Amber alert was issued and soon canceled after the child was found alone in a car along Oregon 99 near Cottage Grove.
Fatal plane crash — A sheriff said a well-known Eastern Oregon rancher has died in a light plane crash north of the community of Juntura. Malheur County Sheriff Brian Wolfe said Michael Bentz, 51, of Juntura was flying the plane Thursday as he helped cowboys on the ground move cattle. The sheriff said the aircraft apparently came in contact with a power line and crashed. Bentz was alone in the 1979 Bellanca aircraft.
Car crash — A mental health evaluation has been ordered for a Linn County man who told deputies he deliberately crashed his SUV with his wife and 6-year-old boy inside — and then climbed 70-80 feet into a tree and refused for five hours to come down. Sheriff Bruce Riley said nobody was seriously hurt early Friday. The wife and boy were treated at a hospital. By midmorning, a mental health worker arrived and after an hour talked the man down. Riley said family members told deputies the 33-year-old man suffers from what may be a bipolar disorder. Riley said he didn’t offer a reason for the crash. He was hospitalized in Corvallis.
Killing trial — A former detective who investigated the slayings of a Southern Oregon husband and wife has testified he feels there is some truth to stories about flesh-eating zombies. Former Josephine County deputy Josh White was called Wednesday by defense lawyers in the trial of Gary Goins. Goins is charged with killing his brother and his brother’s wife at their home north of Grants Pass. Asked by defense attorney Steve Lindsey to “talk a little bit about humans turning into flesh-eating zombies,” White responded, “That’s just a theory.” Pressed, White responded “yeah” to the idea humans turn into zombies. A termination letter from the sheriff introduced as evidence said White had been insubordinate and drunk on the job, and had regularly discussed government conspiracy theories.
