Fred, was born in South Bend, IN to Johannes Frederick and Isabel Betty (Kranitz) Winther. He was 75 years old at the time of his passing.

In 1947, the family moved to Portland. He graduated from Benson High School in 1958 and volunteered for the Draft serving in the Army as a Military Policeman. He was also a Sergeant in the Oregon Air National Guard until 1984. After his military service, he entered college at Portland State and in the summers worked at a fire lookout in Idaho overlooking the Snake River.

He started his police career as a Deputy at Washington County Sheriffs Department; then a short stay with Oregon State Police. The last 18 years of his law enforcement career was at the Clackamas County Sheriffs Office.

In 1968, he married Lyleth Query and in 1980 he was married to Kathy Brown.

After retirement in 1992, he and Kathy moved to Tucson, AZ for 10 years and returned to Redmond, OR in 2004 where they currently live.

Fred was a caring, gentle, and kind person who loved travel, photography, walking, hiking, and the outdoors; but most of all his family and his cats.

He is survived by his wife Kathy; daughters, Janell Thompson of Redmond, OR, June (Phil) Smith of Battleground, WA, April of Glendale AZ; sister-in-law Patty Brown, close friends Lyleth Winther, Marla Hays of Grain Valley, MO, Jim and Elsie McDonell … and his four cats.

Fred will be laid to rest at Sunset Hills Memorial Park in Portland in a private family service. Donations may be made to Clackamas County Peace Officers’ Benevolent Foundation, PO Box 678, Clackamas, OR 97015 or Best Friends Animal Sanctuary, 5001 Angel Canyon Road,Kanab, Utah
