Baseball

Beavers open series with shutout — Pitcher Andrew Moore recorded 13 strikeouts and gave up two hits, while Caleb Hamilton belted a two-run home run in the eighth inning, leading Oregon State to a 4-0 Pac-12 Conference shutout over California on Friday night in Corvallis. Moore pushed his record to 7-2. Offensively, Jeff Hendrix also had two hits for the Beavers (37-15-1 overall, 18-9-1 Pac-12). Starter Daulton Jefferies (5-5) suffered the loss for Cal (33-18, 17-11).

Ducks lose opener to Bruins — UCLA broke a 3-3 tie in the top of the ninth inning when Oregon relief pitcher Stephen Nogosek walked the Bruins’ Kevin Kramer with the bases loaded, scoring Christoph Bono from third in a 4-3 Pac-12 Conference victory on Friday in Eugene. Oregon (35-23 overall, 14-14 Pac-12) outhit UCLA 10-6, but seven walks by the Ducks’ pitching staff gave the Bruins (42-12, 22-6) several base runners. Middle reliever Stephen Nogosek (6-2) got the loss for the Ducks. UCLA reliever David Berg (7-1) earned the win.

Cycling

Contador crashes, loses lead to Aru at Giro — Alberto Contador lost the overall lead of the Giro d’Italia to Fabio Aru after he was involved in a crash toward the end of Friday’s rainy 13th stage in Jesolo, Italy, which was won by Sacha Modolo. Aru escaped the crash, which took out a number of cyclists just outside the final three kilometers (two miles) to move 19 seconds ahead of Contador. Mikel Landa moved into third, 1 minute, 14 seconds behind the Italian. It is the first time Contador has lost the overall lead of a Grand Tour in his career.

Basketball

Harlem Globetrotters great Marques Haynes dies at 89 — Marques Haynes, the legendary Harlem Globetrotters showman often called the greatest dribbler in basketball history, has died. He was 89. He died Friday in Plano, Texas, of natural causes, the Globetrotters said. CEO Kurt Schneider said “basketball has lost one of its most iconic figures.” For a related story, see Obituaries, B5.
