There is still a day of tennis left to play at the Class 5A boys state championships, but Summit coach Josh Cordell can celebrate a little early as his Storm clinched their fourth state title in five years Friday.

The Storm have collected 21.5 points during the first two days of play at West Hills Racquet and Fitness Club in Portland, well clear of second-place Marist Catholic, which has nine. Summit could finish the tournament with up to 28.5 points, which would be a new 5A tournament record.

“We knew we had (the state title) after the quarterfinal round,” Cordell said. “It took a lot of pressure off the players “

Summit’s Carter Quigley defeated Rajul Chikkalingaiah in the singles semifinals, but on the other side of the draw Nathan Hampton of Churchill defeated Summit’s Chandler Oliveira, the No. 2 seed, to prevent an all-Summit state final.

“We were really bummed for Chandler; he had such a tough quarterfinal, and he didn’t have much left for the semis,” Cordell said. “He’s worked so hard to get to this point.”

Logan Hausler and Daniel Pino will represent the Storm in the state doubles final today at Tualatin Hills Tennis Center in Beaverton, while Thomas Wimberly and Hudson Mickel lost to Austin Tyner and A.J. Bartko of Marist Catholic in the semifinal round and will face Wilson Xing and Jonah Wafula of Corvallis in the third-place match.

Ridgeview’s Brett Blundell and Summit’s Cole Younger both lost to Nick Lee of La Salle Prep in consolation matches Friday, while Tyner and Bartko knocked out Bend High’s Zach Hite and Aaron Banquer-Glenn in the doubles quarterfinal round. Josh Maitre and Peter Rutherford of Summit won both of their matches in the doubles consolation bracket Friday and will play Greg Dettmer and Jon Rast of La Salle in the consolation finals today.

At the first day of the Class 4A/3A/2A/1A state championship at Oregon State University in Corvallis, Colin Rinert won his first match against Molalla’s Emmett Copher but fell to Ethan Berkey of North Marion in the quarterfinal round. Jack Stubblefield from Crook County stumbled in his first-round match against Carlos Angel of McLoughlin, losing in three sets, but remains alive in the consolation bracket. He will face Coleman Sherry from Catlin Gabel in the consolation semifinals today. Madras’ Obie Eriza and Jered Pichette also lost their first-round match but defeated Josh Ebel and Derek Yohannan to reach the consolation semis.

After the first day of competition, the Outlaws have two points and sit in a tie for ninth place in the team standings, while Crook County and Madras both have 0.5 points.
