Left Coast Country plays McMenamins

As band names go, Left Coast Country’s is a pretty good one.

It’s geographically accurate — the quintet is from Portland — and the word Country plainly gets across what these guys do. Sure, Bluegrass or Newgrass might have been more accurate, but then you lose the alliteration! Country is a broader term, but totally fair.

Also, there’s something about the phrase Left Coast Country that conveys a kind of cool, contemporary take on Americana, and that captures this band’s sound: It’s warm and rich, with a vibe that’s slightly vintage and super laid-back. It’s roots music (or country music) that oozes West Coast style.

None of which is meant to imply that Left Coast Country is anything but a serious and seriously talented group of pickers and singers. The band’s most recent album, “Pines Fly By,” is packed with charming bluegrass tunes that swoop and swing in all the right ways, but resist the genre’s traditional rules. LCC’s ’grass is a more modern style, heavy with melody and willing to engage the heart, not just wow with technical wizardry.

You can hear what I mean by visiting www.leftcoastcountry.com and clicking on “Music.” Or go see ’em for free next week at McMenamins. Left Coast Country is a band that Bend could connect with, given a little effort on our part.

Left Coast Country; 7 p.m. Thursday; free; McMenamins Old St. Francis School, 700 NW Bond St., Bend; www.mcmenamins.com or 541-382-5174.
