American Airlines plans to offer its daily flight from Redmond Airport to Los Angeles International Airport only at certain times during the year beginning in September, according to Alexis Aran Coello, communications manager for the airline.

Coello said the daily flights, which are operated by SkyWest Airlines, would stop on Sept. 8 before resuming for the holidays on Dec. 17. She did not have details for the schedule in 2016 once the flight resumes during the winter.

According to a news release from Redmond Airport, American Airlines will also be adding a larger, 76-seat aircraft in the summer of 2016 for routes into and out of Central Oregon, although Coello did not say whether the plane would be used for flights to L.A. Currently, the route from Redmond to Los Angeles is the only flight that American offers to Redmond.

American Airlines began offering direct flights from Redmond to L.A. in June 2013 after area residents met the goal of agreeing to purchase about $350,000 in prepaid tickets. The airline also received $500,000 from a federal Small Community Air Service Development Program grant, an estimated $230,000 marketing campaign and $40,000 in airport-landing fee waivers, according to The Bulletin’s archives.

Before American began the service, the region had been without direct flights from Redmond to L.A. for about three years. Horizon Air flew the route from 2006-10.
