- Andy Tullis / The BulletinCity of Bend employees dig out a hole to repair a broken water main under NE Eighth Street earlier this month. Two homeowners who say their home was damaged by the rupture may sue the city.
Repair work on a broken water main on NE Eighth Street is complete and nearby roads should be at least partially reopened by 5:30 p.m., the city of Bend announced this afternoon.
The 12-inch water main broke shortly before 5 a.m. along NE Eighth Street between NE Ravenwood Drive and NE Dyer Road, Justin Finestone, spokesman for the city wrote in emails. Water spewing from the broken main damaged nearby properties and possibly flooded a few homes.
“A lot of it was just landscaping washed away,” Finestone said.
City of Bend utility crews responded and shut off the water, according to Finestone. As of this evening 15 homes that were without water much of the day were supplied again.
Utility workers said the cast-iron pipe broke due to age and surrounding rocky soil, according to Finestone. The pipe that failed was approximately 50 years old.
