Grammy award-winning composer Christopher Tin will be in Bend this weekend to conduct a workshop with Central Oregon Youth Orchestra Saturday. He’ll also lead the orchestra as it plays one of his tunes at its spring concert Sunday.
“Christopher is going to conduct his own music, which is somewhat (unusual) for a composer,” said Amy Goeser Kolb, founder of COYO.
COYO will play an arrangement of Tin’s “Iza Ngomso” (“Come Together”), from his 2014 album, “The Drop that Contained the Sea,” which debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard’s classical chart, during the 2 p.m. concert Sunday at Bend High School, 230 NE Sixth St.
COYO has been invited to give a June 14 performance at Carnegie Hall. “Iza Ngomso” will be on the program, and the California-based Tin will be in attendance, Kolb said.
Tin, a composer for films, video games and commercials, writes classical music with a world music influence. In 2011, he won two Grammys for his classical crossover album, “Calling All Dawns.” He’s best known for “Baba Yetu,” a version of the Lord’s Prayer sung in a Swahili and featured in the video game “Civilization IV.”
“It’s the first time in the history of the Grammy awards that anybody had ever been nominated and presented a Grammy award for music that was used in a video game,” Kolb said. “He’s really into arts education as well as being a really prolific young and up-and-coming composer.”
Donations for Sunday’s concert will be accepted at the door. Money raised will help fund COYO’s trip to Carnegie Hall in June.
Kolb noted that for at least some of the kids, it will be their first time on an airplane, in addition to their first time at Carnegie.
“I really believe that part of the musical education is this sort of global training we’re giving them, about being a responsible … safe traveler,” said Kolb. “We’re going to go to an airport and fly across the country and stay at a hotel and play Carnegie Hall.”
