Royals outfielders Lorenzo Cain and Alex Gordon, catcher Salvador Perez, shortstop Alcides Escobar and second baseman Omar Infante hold leads.
HOCKEY
Female star Ruggiero among Hall picks — Stanley Cup winners Nicklas Lidstrom, Chris Pronger and Sergei Fedorov and former NHL star Phil Housley are among the seven newcomers in the Hockey Hall of Fame. The Hall announced Monday that Angela Ruggiero, Bill Hay and Peter Karmanos Jr. also were voted into the shrine. Hay, a former president of Hockey Canada, and Karmanos, the owner of the Carolina Hurricanes, made it in the builder category. Ruggiero was a defenseman on four United States teams in the Olympics and is the fourth woman to be elected to the Hall of Fame as a player.
FOOTBALL
Akron buys tickets to avoid being dropped from FBS — Among all 125 NCAA Football Bowl Subdivision teams, Akron had the worst home attendance this past season. The Zips drew a total of 55,019 fans for six home games at their 30,000-seat stadium. It was the lowest number reported by the university since 2005, when the team attracted 54,464 for five home games. The university is forced by the NCAA to purchase tickets to home games. Schools are required to average 15,000 fans in actual or paid attendance over a rolling two-year period to remain in Division I. University athletics officials are hopeful the attendance figures will rebound next season with five of the Zips’ six home games scheduled to be played on Saturdays. Three of last season’s home games were held on Tuesday nights due to a television deal between the Mid-American Conference and ESPN.
