The largest wildfire burning in Central Oregon grew slightly Tuesday.

The Corner Creek Fire has grown to 28,766 acres, up 1,600 acres from Monday, according to the interagency team managing the fire fight. Moderate weather conditions gave firefighters the opportunity to strengthen fire lines and helicopter water drops stopped the spread of the fire on an unlined edge. Containment is up to 40 percent and 866 firefighters are assigned to the fire.

The fire is about 11 miles south of Dayville, which is about an 85-mile drive east of Prineville along U.S. Highway 26.

A June 29 lightning strike in the Black Canyon Wilderness started the fire, which is burning on public land overseen by the Ochoco National Forest and the Bureau of Land Management’s Prineville District, as well as some private land, according to the team. The fire’s north end is burning in the Black Canyon Wilderness, where terrain is rugged and access limited.

Thunderstorms Tuesday brought more lightning to Central Oregon, but so far no new large wildfires, according to the Central Oregon Interagency Dispatch Center’s Twitter feed. The storms sparked seven new fires, but also brought rain and hail, helping keep the new fires to less than a quarter acre each.
