Japan to redo costly Stadium — In a major reversal, Japan’s leader announced Friday that the plans for the main stadium for the 2020 Olympics will be redone because of spiraling costs. As a result, the stadium won’t be completed in time for the 2019 Rugby World Cup, as planned, Prime Minister Shinzo Abe said. The government has come under growing criticism as the estimated cost for the new National Stadium rose to 252 billion yen ($2 billion). The prime minister said he had obtained the consent of Mori, a former prime minister, and instructed the sports and Olympics ministers to start preparing immediately a process to choose a new plan.

California judge dismisses concussion lawsuit — A federal judge in California dismissed a lawsuit against U.S. Soccer and other soccer organizations that said they had not done enough to reduce the risk of injury from concussions and repetitive heading of balls. U.S. District Judge Phyllis Hamilton ruled Thursday that the seven soccer players named as plaintiffs had no right to bring the lawsuit in part because they had failed to show they had been injured or were in imminent danger of injury and that the defendants were to blame. She cited the argument to dismiss the case against U.S. Soccer and four other national or regional soccer organizations. Plaintiffs’ attorney Steve Berman says he will amend the complaint based on the judge’s instructions.

Ethiopian sets world record in women’s 1,500 — Ethiopian Genzebe Dibaba powered down the home straight to set a world record in the women’s 1,500 meters at a Diamond League meeting in Monaco on Friday. Dibaba collapsed to the ground in apparent disbelief after crossing the line in 3 minutes, 50.07 seconds — eclipsing the long-standing mark of 3:50.46 set by China’s Qu Yunxia in 1993.

Braves extend contracts of coaches through 2016 — The Atlanta Braves have extended the contracts of manager Fredi Gonzalez and his coaches through the 2016 season. The team says the extensions include club options for 2017. The Braves return from the All-Star break with a 42-47 record in Gonzalez’s fifth season. His record with the Braves is 400-337, including the 2013 NL East title and a wild card spot in 2012.

4 athletes pulled from Pan Am for failed drug tests — Four athletes have been pulled from the Pan Am Games after failing drug tests. Organizers said Friday that three tested positive for anabolic steroids: weightlifter Cinthya Vanessa Dominguez Lara of Mexico and baseball players Nelson Gomez of Puerto Rico and Javier Jesus Ortiz Angulo of Colombia. The fourth, baseball player Mario Mercedes Castillo of the Dominican Republic, tested positive for a banned stimulant. The Peruvian delegation also says swimmer Mauricio Fiol has tested positive for steroids and has been suspended from the team. Fiol won the silver medal in the 200-meter butterfly. Eduardo De Rose, chairman of the organization’s medical commission, says it’s surprising to see this many doping violations so early in the games.
