The Free Summer Sunday Concert Series will take on an international bent Sunday with Okaidja + Shokoto.
Portland-based multi-instrumentalist Okaidja grew up on the west coast of Ghana, soaking in the sounds of the native traditional music through his musically-inclined family. After a stint with the Ghana Dance Ensemble, Okaidja first toured the U.S. in 1997 and eventually moved there.
His band, Shokoto, grew out of a desire to combine the traditional sounds of his youth with modern influences from across the African diaspora. The band’s mix of multicultural influences, soulful singing and thundering rhythms coalesce on Okaidja’s most recent album, “Messenger,” released in 2013.
Expect an energetic and interactive experience when the band plays the Les Schwab Amphitheater, complete with dancing both on and off the stage.
