Phil Woods, 83: Leading alto saxophonist in mainstream jazz for more than 60 years. Died Tuesday in Stroudsburg, Pennsylvania.
Doug Kendall, 51: Liberal lawyer and co-author of dozens of U.S. Supreme Court briefs challenging the prevailing conservative vision that the Constitution defines the federal government’s jurisdiction narrowly. Died of colon cancer Saturday at his home in Washington, D.C.
Phyllis Tickle, 81: Energized the religion publishing market in the 1990s and wrote dozens of books on spirituality. Died of lung cancer Sept. 22 in Lucy, Tennessee.
