‘JEM AND THE HOLOGRAMS’
Rating: PG for thematic material including reckless behavior, brief suggestive content and some language.
What it’s about: A teen singer goes viral with her music and gets swept up into the big bad music industry.
The kid-attractor factor: Teen stars with a pop music-based plot.
Good lessons/bad lessons: As spelled out in the film — never fear the unknown, create your own destiny, use your gifts. There are also some subtextual lessons along the lines of never asking for permission (for good or for bad).
Violence: None
Language: None
Sexuality: Some flirting and a kiss between Jerrica and Rio, a beefcake shot of Rio.
Drugs: None
Parents advisory: This empowering music film is acceptable for kids of all ages, though the youngest ones might not get it. Parents might even enjoy the source material from their own youth.
‘THE LAST WITCH HUNTER’
Rating: PG-13 for sequences of fantasy violence and frightening images.
What it’s about: An ancient witch hunter is cursed to roam the earth hunting witches for centuries.
The kid-attractor factor: A spooky Halloween genre flick; star Vin Diesel
Good lessons/bad lessons: Good: always follow through with your mission, take care of your friends. Bad: scary women should never be trusted.
Violence: A lot of heavily CGI’d battles between Calder and various witches, including a few thumping fisticuffs and bar brawls.
Language: None
Sexuality: A suggestion and a laugh about a flight attendant dalliance, a flirtation between Kaulder and Chloe.
Drugs: A scene in a witchy cocktail bar with various spooky libations; hookah smoking
Parents advisory: This would be OK for teens and advanced tweens, but probably too scary for most kids.
