Those who have failed to clear the snow from the sidewalk outside their home or business could be getting cited by the city of Bend, starting today.

Its been years since anyone has been fined for failing to abide by the city’s snow removal code, according to James Goff, head of city code enforcement. Under the code, the owners of commercial properties must clear adjoining sidewalks within six hours of a storm, while residential property owners have 24 hours. Both are subject to fines of up to $100 a day.

However, Goff said due to limited staffing in his department, enforcement has been nonexistent — until now.

Last year, the city sent letters to businesses and residential properties near Cascades East Transit bus stops. In early November, letters were sent to properties along identified safe routes to school,
