A nearly head-on crash on U.S. Highway 97 Sunday afternoon sent several people to the hospital, according to the Deschutes County Sheriff’s Office.
Deschutes County Sheriff’s Sgt. Vance Lawrence wrote in a news release Sunday that according to witness statements, a southbound Ford F-150 near Bowery Lane lost control and crossed into oncoming traffic, striking a Ford Explorer at about 1 p.m.
When deputies arrived, both vehicles had sustained damage, with the Explorer on the east side of the highway in a ditch. The F-150 contained a driver, Efrin Mena, 53, of Medford, and five passengers, while the Explorer contained the driver, Jerome Davis, 48, of Redmond, and three passengers.
The driver of Explorer was extricated by the Bend Fire Department, but passengers were able to leave the vehicle without help, though all occupants were taken to St. Charles Redmond via ambulance. The driver of the F-150 also had to be extricated, and its occupants were taken to St. Charles Bend via ambulance.
No citations were issued in connection with the crash as of Sunday evening. The office urged motorists to drive safely in the lingering snow and ice.
“There were multiple crashes and slide off incidents throughout Deschutes County today and the highest number of them were due to driving too fast for the dangerous conditions,” Lawrence wrote.
