A man accused of stabbing his Central Oregon Community College roommate late last year pleaded not guilty in connection with the alleged assault Monday, according to his attorney, Timothy Fleming.

Eric Norgaard faces one count each of attempted murder, first-degree assault and unlawful use of a weapon, according to Bulletin archives.

Fleming filed a notice of intent to rely on “mental disease or defect” in Norgaard’s defense.

A hearing to consider a request for Norgaard to be transferred to a secure inpatient facility is scheduled for Dec. 14, Fleming wrote.

“The court already approved this request when he was being treated at (the Oregon State Hospital) under civil commitment but we have to make a second request because he is now being treated under a guardianship,” Fleming wrote.

Meanwhile, Norgaard’s former roommate, James Briles, has sued the college for $3 million.
