Deschutes National Forest firefighters plan to burn slash piles on several hundred acres over the next two weeks.

The piles are found around the forest, including west of Bend, north of Cottonwood Road in Sunriver, east of the High Desert Museum, south of Deschutes River Woods, near Burgess Road in La Pine and west of Cardinal Bridge and Benham West in Sunriver, according to a news release from the national forest.

Smoke may rise from the piles and linger days after being lit as they smolder, according to the release. The piles are scrap leftover from thinning intended to reduce the amount of vegetation that could fuel a summertime wildfire.
