Storm lead field at Bend Winter Classic

They finished 1-2 at the Class 5A boys and girls swimming state championships last season, so it only seems fitting for crosstown foes Summit, the boys champ, and Bend High, the girls state winner, to kick off the season Saturday in thrilling fashion.
Mikayla Grover won the 100-yard breaststroke by nearly eight seconds at the Swimming for Giving meet at Juniper Swim & Fitness Center, helping the Storm girls edge the Lava Bears 93-87. For the boys, Baxter Halligan and Taj Mercer each won two races to pace Summit, which topped the seven-team standings with 97 points — 11 points ahead of Bend.
Helping the cause for the Summit girls was Lily Chrisman, who placed second in the 200 freestyle and third in the 500 freestyle. Ali Epple finished second in the 200 individual medley for the Storm, and Maddie Coleman was runner-up in the 100 free. Bend’s Emily Brockman won the 200 IM and placed second in the 500 free, while Chyna Fish claimed the 50 freestyle by nearly two seconds and finished second in the 100 butterfly.
For Mountain View, which was third as a team with 84 points, Emma Brady won the 200 free, and Chelsea Evans took the 100 freestyle. Kennedy Bright was first in the 100 backstroke for the Cougars, leading a 1-2-3 Mountain View finish as Brady and Marie Allen placed second and third, respectively. Sisters’ Brooke Robillard was second in the 100 breaststroke, Ridgeview’s Tristy Osbon placed fifth in the 100 backstroke, and Melissa Field recorded the top finish for Madras by taking fourth in the 50 free.
Halligan won the 50 freestyle by 0.25 seconds and claimed the 100 backstroke for the Summit boys. Mercer placed first in the 100 fly and the 100 breast, and Christian Bergin contributed with a win in the 200 freestyle and a second-place finish in the 100 free. The Lava Bears’ Christian Offenhauser won the 200 IM, Kurt Felder took the 500 freestyle and was third in the 200 IM, and Garrett Ross placed second and third in the 100 backstroke and the 100 butterfly, respectively.
Christopher Davami placed second in both the 200 IM and the 100 breast for Mountain View, which was third as a team with 58 points, and Jonathan Davami took second in the 100 fly and third in the 500 free. Madras, which took fourth, was led by Garrett Webb, who was second in the 100 back and third in the 100 breaststroke. Owen Hucke won the 100 free for Ridgeview, and Redmond High’s Joel Markham placed seventh in the 500 freestyle.
