Crook County places 9th at Reno wrestling tournament

RENO, Nev. — Top seed Hayden Bates advanced as far as the semifinals at 138 pounds Saturday and placed fourth at the Reno Tournament of Champions to lead Crook County to a ninth-place finish at the prestigious 107-team tournament with 126 points.

Poway, from California, topped the team standings with 212 points.

Kurt Mode, at 145, and Carson Raymond, at 195, also appeared in the semis for the Cowboys. Both, however, ran into the eventual individual champs with Mode falling to Jaron Jensen of Herriman (Utah) and Raymond losing to Wyatt Koelling of Davis (Utah). Both Crook County wrestlers placed fifth.

Cade Woodward, who advanced to the quarterfinals at 182, took sixth for the Cowboys, while Cole Ovens placed sixth at 152. Pacer Quire advanced as far as the quarterfinals at 120.

Boys basketball

Corvallis 66, Bend 65: The last of the Spartans’ 10 3-point baskets came as time expired and beat the Lava Bears in a closely contested nonconference game at Bend High. Bend led 51-48 going into the fourth period and 65-63 as Corvallis inbounded the ball under its own basket with 3.2 seconds left. Ben Rodgers converted the decisive 3-pointer for the Spartans (4-1) as the clock ran out. The Bears (2-3) saw their two-game winning streak end despite a 27-point performance by senior guard Mario Mora that included seven 3-pointers.

Mountain View 90, Crescent Valley 77: The Cougars and Raiders combined to score 58 points in the fourth quarter of the Cougars’ home win. Davis Holly led Mountain View (4-1) to its fourth straight win with 27 points, while Jordan Vance and Matt Van Tassell both scored 16 points and Zach Emerson had 12.

Lebanon 67, Redmond 39: LEBANON — Cody Moss scored 17 points and Brandon Benson added 10 points and five steals to lead the Panthers (3-3) in a nonconference road loss.

Madras 68, Elma, Wash. 55: SEASIDE — Austin Rauschenburg scored 23 points to lead Madras to its first win of the season at the Seaside Holiday Classic over Elma (Washington). The White Buffaloes (1-5) trailed 35-33 at halftime but outscored Elma 35-20 in the second half. Damean Frank scored 16 points and Shae Yeahquo added eight for Madras.

Sisters 56, Newport 36: SEASIDE — Sisters fell behind 12-1 to open the game but recovered to win the third-place game at the Seaside Holiday Classic. Hayes Moore led the Outlaws (5-2) with 15 points, while Steen Johnson scored 12.

Crook County 66, Regis 65: AURORA — Blake Bartels scored a game-high 31 points as Crook County (4-2) won the North Marion Holiday Classic and extended its winning streak to four games. Bartels also added 12 rebounds. Seth Kessi had 16 points, six steals, six rebounds and five assists, and Garrett Harper scored 13 points for the Cowboys.

Culver 47, Trinity Lutheran 17: CULVER — Ten Culver players scored as the Bulldogs beat Trinity Lutheran for third place in the Culver Booster Club Tournament. Tristan Bogart and Matt Krueger scored seven points apiece, and Mike Davis had six for Culver (2-4), which totaled 12 assists on 22 field goals. Noah Woodward scored seven points, and Justin Fuerstenau added six for the Saints (0-7).

South Wasco County 64, Gilchrist 24: CULVER — The Grizzlies slipped to 5-3 with a loss at the Culver Booster Club Tournament.

North Lake 58, McKenzie 29: CRANE — Cameron McCord nearly outscored McKenzie by himself, leading the Cowboys with 27 points on the final day of the Crane Tournament. Jubal Pierson added 11 points for North Lake (2-5).

Girls basketball

Corvallis 58, Bend 20: CORVALLIS — Corvallis built an 11-point lead in the first quarter and never let up, handing the Lava Bears their second loss in as many days. Kylee Roath was the top scorer for Bend (2-3) with 10 points.

Crescent Valley 68, Mountain View 52: CORVALLIS — The Cougars (2-3) led 16-13 after the first quarter but tripped up in the second period and trailed 30-20 at Crescent Valley. Mountain View’s Hailey Goetz hit four 3-pointers and scored 20 points, while Kylee Reinwald scored 13.

Lebanon 79, Redmond 25: LEBANON — The Panthers fell to 2-4 after a third straight nonconference loss.

Madras 65, Astoria 58: SEASIDE — Lynden Harry scored a game-high 23 points to lead Madras in its final game at the Seaside Holiday Classic. The White Buffaloes trailed 35-24 at halftime before outscoring the Fishermen 41-23 in the second half score. Harry also had seven rebounds and six steals, Leah Suppah contributed with 18 points and five steals, and Kaliyah Iverson scored 16 points and added nine rebounds for Madras (4-1).

Corbett 36, Sisters 12: SEASIDE — The Outlaws (0-7) trailed 20-3 at halftime before losing on the final day of the Seaside Holiday Classic. Olivia Stewart led Sisters with six points.

Cleveland 52, Crook County 47: AURORA — Chelsea Thomas had 20 points and Kimmer Severance added 18 points to lead the Cowgirls (2-4) in their final game of the North Marion Holiday Classic.

Culver 44, Trinity Lutheran 3: CULVER — Alysha Fritz scored 16 points and Hannah Lewis added 10 to lead Culver past Trinity Lutheran in the championship game of the Culver Booster Club Tournament. Fritz and Lewis were both named to the all-tournament team after the Bulldogs (6-1) notched their sixth consecutive win. Mariah Murphy grabbed eight rebounds and Akela Haverlandt scored all three points for the Saints (5-2), whose squad was slowed by illness.

South Wasco County 29, Gilchrist 23: CULVER — The Grizzlies suffered a fourth straight setback to drop to 2-6. Cassandra Blum paced Gilchrist with 18 points and 13 rebounds.
