One-man band McDougall returns to Bend

The one-man band parade continues at Volcanic Theatre Pub tonight with Portland folkie McDougall, who returns to the venue after playing there in October last year.

But unlike That 1 Guy — who brought his homemade instruments and electronic samples to the stage last week — McDougall sticks to a strictly analog setup, playing acoustic guitar while pounding at a drum kit with his feet. You won’t find a single looping device here — just a guy bashing away at some instruments and singing his guts out.

And the array of sounds McDougall makes all by himself in real time is impressive, incorporating an army of stringed instruments, harmonica and percussion into a bracing mix of traditional folk and blues. The songs themselves follow in the storytelling tradition of his folk forbearers, at times irreverent and humorous, mournful and contemplative.

On record, he’s largely stuck to the same, acoustic-driven setup — until this year’s three-song “Diversion” EP, that is. The new songs find the singer stretching out on electric guitar and incorporating driving indie rock rhythms into the mix.

To see how he handles this live, well, you’ll just have to see him live. Local acoustic rock and soul duo Natty Red opens the show.
