Toledo takes Boca Raton Bowl — Phillip Ely hit Cody Thompson with an 80-yard touchdown pass early in the fourth quarter Tuesday night, and Toledo won Jason Candle’s first game as head coach, beating No. 24 Temple 32-17 in a soggy Boca Raton Bowl in Florida. Candle was promoted from offensive coordinator three weeks ago when Matt Campbell took over at Iowa State. The Rockets (10-2) positioned themselves to crack the final Top 25 for the first time since 2001, the last season they won 10 games. Temple (10-4) lost for the fourth time in seven games after starting 7-0.

Akron gets past Utah State in Potato Bowl — Robert Stein made three field goals and Jatavis Brown led a smothering defense as Akron earned its first bowl win, a 23-21 victory over Utah State on Tuesday in the Famous Idaho Potato Bowl in Boise, Idaho. Stein, who became the school’s career scoring leader with 268 points, connected from 29, 33 and 46 yards, and was selected the game’s MVP. His longest kick gave the Zips a 23-14 lead with 8:15 remaining. Akron (8-5) finished with eight wins for the first time since moving up to FBS in 1987.

Skiing

Kristoffersen wins; Hirscher nearly hit by falling drone — Henrik Kristoffersen of Norway won by a massive 1.25 seconds in a World Cup night slalom marred by a drone crash involving four-time defending overall champion Marcel Hirscher Tuesday in Madonna Di Campiglio, Italy. A drone carrying a TV camera for the broadcast crew crashed to the snow during Hirscher’s second run just behind the Austrian. While Hirscher may have been hit by some small pieces, he didn’t appear to notice. The Olympic bronze medalist, Kristoffersen earned his sixth World Cup victory.

Baseball

Smoltz to join Buck in Fox MLB broadcast — Hall of Famer John Smoltz has been promoted to Fox’s lead baseball analyst and will work alongside play-by-play man Joe Buck, displacing Harold Reynolds and Tom Verducci. Fox made the announcement Tuesday. Network spokesman Dan Bell said Fox was discussing different roles with Reynolds, who also works for the MLB Network, and Verducci, who also works for the MLB Network and Sports Illustrated.

Cycling

Tour de France to start from Germany in 2017 — The Tour de France will start from the German city of Duesseldorf in 2017. Tour organizers say it will be the fourth time in the race’s century-old history that cycling’s showpiece starts in Germany. London was considered the favorite to host the 2017 race start, but withdrew its bid in September.

Basketball

NCAA puts University of Hawaii men on probation — The NCAA is putting the University of Hawaii men’s basketball team on three years of probation after an investigation found former coach Gib Arnold violated ethical conduct rules and provided false or misleading information to investigators. The NCAA said Tuesday that Hawaii will lose two scholarships during the next two seasons, leaving it with 11. The team also cannot play in postseason games during the 2016-2017 academic year.
