Snuff Garrett, 76: Former Texas disc jockey who was forsaken by his own music teachers but became a millionaire by the time he was 30 producing records for Bobby Vee, Del Shannon, Gary Lewis & the Playboys and other artists. Died of cancer Dec. 16 in Tucson, Arizona.
Dr. Alfred Gilman, 74: Won a Nobel Prize for his breakthrough research into the inner workings of cells and later left Texas’ much-ballyhooed $3 billion cancer-fighting initiative, citing a lack of oversight that led to a scandal. Died Wednesday in Dallas after fighting pancreatic cancer.
