Run Into the New Year at McMenamins Old St. Francis School

Downhill Ryder isn’t the only band that will get down at McMenamins Old St. Francis School this coming week. Parallel 44 Presents will bring its third annual Run Into the New Year series to the venue, with free, live, local music every night from Saturday through Wednesday. The shows begin at 7 p.m.
Shady GroOove is up first for some after-Christmas jamming Saturday. While the sensibilities of the Grateful Dead and Phish do offer a starting point (and a source of covers), Shady GroOove ups the bluegrass quotient with Leah Naftalin’s fiddle taking the place of the standard electric guitar.
On Sunday, beat the holiday blues with, well, more blues. Local powerhouse Thomas T. and The Blue Chips blends hard-driving Chicago blues, swinging Texas blues and a touch of funk — and of course, more jams.
String trio Popcorn will strip down popular songs both new and old to their bare essentials Monday night. As the band’s Facebook bio puts it, “Popcorn plays the covers you do, and don’t want to hear.” Then, Brent Alan & His Funky Friends — led by guitar-slinging, Hawaiian-turned-Oregonian Alan, will turn up the funk (and soul) Tuesday night.
The party’s not over after Downhill Ryder’s set Wednesday night. Bend favorite Tubaluba returns to Father Luke’s Room to play New Year’s Eve alongside local mainstay Mosley Wotta. Unlike most McMenamins shows, this one starts late, 9 p.m., and has a $10 cover — well worth it, considering the talent onstage.
