Ryan Brennecke / The BulletinMountain Views Erica Skoog (22) shoots over a defender to score during the first half against Camas during the first day of the Holiday Hoopfest on Monday.

After a strong first-quarter start, Mountain View ran into a smothering defense boasted by Camas (Washington) that cooled off the Cougars in their 52-36 girls basketball loss Monday at the Les Schwab Oregon Holiday Hoopfest at Summit High.

Mountain View (2-4) grabbed a 13-9 lead after the first quarter but did not hit a field goal in the second quarter and went into the half trailing 21-19.

“The second quarter actually kind of killed us,” Mountain View coach Steve Riper said. “We did a good job of getting to the (free-throw) line but the second really hurt us. We just had a little lull at the end of the quarter.”

The Cougars continued to struggle against the Camas defense after the break, making just two shots in the third quarter on their way to being outscored 31-17 in the second half. Mountain View played more aggressively than it had in recent games, attempting making 14 of 21 free throws against the Papermakers, who were just 3-of-9 from the foul line.

“It was kind of tough getting good open looks,” Riper said.

“We did a really good job, particularly in the first half of the third quarter, getting to the foul line. But in the fourth quarter, we only shot two free throws. We did a good job of attacking. But then we got away from that.”

Ryann Van der Zwiep led the Cougars with 13 points, while Hailey Goetz added eight points. Erica Skoog had seven rebounds for Mountain View, which committed 22 turnovers. Teague Schroeder had 15 points and Stephanie Knight added 11 for Camas.
