A longtime U.S. Forest Service employee and Bend native is hospitalized after being struck by a truck while cycling.
Chris Sabo, trails specialist with the Deschutes National Forest, was hit at the intersection of Reed Market Road and Ninth Street while commuting to work Tuesday morning, according to his boss, Marv Lang, forest trails supervisor.
“He’s in pretty poor shape with some internal injuries and some broken bones,” Lang said. “He’s basically stable, but they’re keeping him pretty much sedated so he doesn’t move around and hurt anything else.”
Sabo has helped provide updates on trail conditions published in The Bulletin for more than 20 years, and he’s helped explain avalanche and other dangers one may encounter in the national forest.
Lang said Sabo’s family has set up a page on the Caring Bridge website to provide updates on his condition. The website requires registration to view updates.
