Firefighters created a line Wednesday around the Paulina Fire, limiting its growth to about 3 acres and containing about 80 percent of the blaze, officials said Wednesday night.

The wildfire burning on Deschutes National Forest land 7 miles northeast of La Pine started Tuesday and grew to 50 acres by Tuesday evening. As of Wednesday night, however, Forest Service officials reported the fire at 53 acres.

“Essentially today we’re having crews maintain that line and start to cool it off 100 feet from the line,” spokeswoman Michelle King said Wednesday. Firefighters put out any small fires close to the line, she explained, by using water or hand tools to mix cool dirt with hot dirt.

The majority of the fire, burning in timber and brush, also now has a long line of hoses connected around it, so that crews can access water from more than one point.

Forest Road 9735 was still closed as of Wednesday evening, but fire managers had lifted the Level 1 evacuation notice, which means be ready for evacuation, according to the update Wednesday night. The cause of the fire had not been determined.

Farther north, containment on the Fryrear Fire reached 100 percent Wednesday, according to Kassidy Kern, a spokeswoman with the Deschutes National Forest, and Fryrear Road had reopened. The fire, which was located between Tumalo and Sisters, burned a little more than 8 acres, Kern said.

The Bybee Creek Fire burning west of Crater Lake had burned 780 acres as of Wednesday night, according to InciWeb.gov, the federal incident information system online.

Firefighters created a line for a fuel break around the fire to stop it from spreading. They’re trying to keep the fire east of the Pacific Crest Trail, south of the Lightning Springs Trail and west of Crater Lake Rim Drive.

A Level 1 evacuation notice went into effect Tuesday for Rim Village and the park headquarters. West Rim Drive remained closed from Rim Village to North Junction on Wednesday, but the park and East Rim Drive were open Wednesday, according to InciWeb. The Pacific Crest Trail also remained closed from Dutton Creek Camp north to the trail parking lot on North Entrance Road.

The Rail Fire in Eastern Oregon more than doubled in size Tuesday, growing to 5,576 acres. The fire, which began Sunday, is burning in lodgepole pines, and as of Wednesday evening, no containment was reported on InciWeb.

The Weigh Station Fire, which burned 688 acres in northeast Oregon, was 55 percent contained as of Wednesday night, according to InciWeb. That fire began Saturday and caused closures along Interstate 84.
