John Sacco, of Redmond, was northbound on Canal in a 1995 Honda Accord just before 3 a.m. when he drove onto the dirt shoulder then over-corrected and rolled several times, according to a news release from the Deschutes County Sheriff’s Office. The vehicle landed upside down in the middle of the road just north of SW Helmholtz Way.

Deputies and Redmond Fire Department medics treated Sacco and the two passengers, 16 and 17, for potentially life-threatening injuries. They were taken by ambulance to St. Charles Redmond and Bend.

Deputies believe Sacco was intoxicated with alcohol and that he may have used marijuana and been operating a cellphone at the time of the crash.

He is suspected of DUII, reckless driving, reckless endangering another and third-degree assault. He was released at the hospital for continuing treatment.

Up to two passengers may have fled the accident, according to deputies.

Reopenings at Crater Lake

Most roads and trails closed by the Bybee Fire in Crater Lake National Park will reopen because of the progress firefighters have made.

The fire had burned about 1,116 acres as of Saturday morning with 45 percent containment, according to a news release from the National Park Service.

The level 1 (get ready) evacuation notice will be lifted at 8 a.m. today for Rim Village and park headquarters.

The Pacific Crest Trail will reopen within the park, including the alternate route along the Rim Trail. The Lightning Springs Trail and camp, however, will remain closed.

West Rim Drive will reopen at 8 a.m. Monday from near the Rim Village to North Junction. The road will be kept closed through the weekend as firefighters continue to work, according to the release.

Park visitors may encounter smoke, firefighters or equipment as pockets of the fire continue to smolder, the release said.
