Controlled burns will be coming to the Crooked River National Grassland near Madras next week, as fire officials try to take advantage of the unseasonably warm and dry weather.

Beginning on Monday if conditions are favorable, fire managers will burn downed juniper trees in two project areas in order to reduce the buildup of hazardous fuels for wildfires, and improve critical winter range for large animals, according to a news release from the U.S. Forest Service.

The Juniper Springs burn will take place 7 miles south of Madras, and east of U.S. Highway 26, while the West Mountain View project will take place 6 miles west of Madras. Both burns are expected to take two days to complete, and smoke may be visible from U.S. Highway 26 and along the West Mountain View Road, according to the release. If smoke drifts onto roads, motorists should slow down, turn on headlights, and proceed with care. Once ignited, units are monitored by firefighters until they are declared out.
