MOUNT BACHELOR — Five individuals placed in the top 10 for both the Summit boys and girls cross-country ski teams Saturday, allowing the Storm to sweep the XC Oregon Invitational at Mt. Bachelor Nordic Center.
In tightly contested races for the team titles, the Summit girls, with 14 points, edged Bend by two points to finish atop the 10-team standings, while the Storm boys, with 11 points, topped the Lava Bears by four points in the seven-team standings.
With joint races consisting of teams from the Northern and Southern leagues of the Oregon Interscholastic Ski Racing Association, the XC Oregon Invitational served as something of a preview for the state meet, which is scheduled for Feb. 23-24 at Mt. Bachelor Nordic Center.
Bend’s Ann McColgan won the girls 5,000-meter skate race with a time of 13 minutes, 45.5 seconds, beating out runner-up Sarah Kilroy, of Redmond Proficiency Academy, by 27.4 seconds. Summit’s Liv Downing took third, and Storm teammates Estelle Hyde, Kensington Myers and Jasper Fievet finished fifth, sixth and seventh, respectively. The Storm’s Ellie Skjersaa rounded out the top 10.
Also for the Lava Bears, who had 16 points as a team, Olivia Colton placed fourth. Brooke Cummings took ninth for Mountain View, which was fourth as a team with 49 points, eight points behind RPA. Natalie Hill’s 13th-place finish led Ridgeview, which claimed fifth with 55 points.
For the boys, Summit’s Will Lange and Samuel Schoderbek went 1-2, and the Storm’s Taylor Nelson, Cooper Nelson and Samuel Hatfield finished 8-9-10. Maximus Nye was third for Bend, which had 15 points, Anton Micek took fifth, and Kailash Moore was seventh.
Iqmal Wolfenden led Mountain View, which was third with 31 points, by taking fourth overall. Ridgeview, which had 66 points to place sixth as a team, was highlighted by Nathan Turpen’s 24th-place finish.
