CORVALLIS — Oregon State football coach Jonathan Smith had a plan of action when he was hired in November.

First, it was to finish recruiting the players already committed to the previous staff and bring them into the fold during the early signing period in December.

The focus then switched to the Feb. 7 signing day.

“Then I felt really confident in hiring a staff and getting 10 guys out on the road in January,” Smith said Wednesday. “We were going to be able to identify and really recruit some really good players and it played out exactly like that.”

All told, the Beavers signed 10 players and added three preferred walk-ons Wednesday. OSU has signed a total of 24 players, including the walk-ons.

On offense, the Beavers added quarterback Jack Colletto, running back Jermar Jefferson, offensive tackles Joshua Gray and Brandon Kipper and guard Griffin Korican.

Smith knew Colletto (6 feet 3, 225 pounds), who played at Camas (Washington) High before spending one season at Arizona Western, from his time as offensive coordinator at Washington.

Smith did not want to overstock with players eligible for one or two seasons, and Colletto has three seasons available.

Colletto’s physical abilities also fit well with the type of quarterback the Beavers want for their system.

“The skill set he has, he can do a lot of different things,” Smith said. “Move and run and throws it really well. Sharp kid. I definitely feel confident he’ll add to our quarterback room.”

Jefferson (5-10, 205) rushed for 1,861 yards and scored 34 touchdowns for Narbonne High in Harbor City, California.

He also showed the ability to catch the ball out of the backfield with 23 receptions for 372 yards and three scores.

Gray (6-4, 265) is athletic and has a frame that can add muscle weight. Kipper (6-6, 280) played a season at Hawaii and was a three-star prospect coming out of Columbia High in Caldwell, Idaho.

Kocian (6-5, 315) is a preferred walk-on who will be in the mix at guard.

On defense, the Beavers signed nose guard Ronnie Audette, end Jeromy Reichner, cornerback Jaden Robinson and outside linebackers John McCartan, Semisi Saluni and Matthew Tago.

OSU also added defensive ends Shawn Elliott and Conner Warick as preferred walk-ons.

Beavers defensive coordinator Tim Tibesar already was familiar with Audette (6-3, 300), who is from Elk River, Minnesota.

Reichner (6-2, 290) also adds size and athleticism up front.

Jaden Robinson has good height (6-0) for a corner and adds good speed to the position. Smith said Robinson runs a 10.7-second 100-yard dash.

An area of focus was getting some longer, taller and athletic players at outside linebacker.

“With the scheme that we want to run and the body types that we’re looking for, that was more of an emphasis, for sure,” Smith said.

The Beavers will try McCartan to start. McCartan (6-5, 220) also plays tight end.

“(McCartan has) good range, height, being able to set the edge,” Smith said. “Can move around and he catches the ball well offensively.”

Saluni also fits the bill at 6-3, 220, but he will not join the program until after he completes a Mormon mission.

Tago (6-2, 215) was a four-star recruit who also played quarterback at Quartz Hill in Palmdale, California.

Tago decommitted from UCLA and was heavily recruited by Nebraska. He reportedly was interested in playing quarterback in college.
