Ducks win opener — Oregon won its fourth straight season opener, defeating Georgia 8-3 at the Kajikawa Classic in Tempe, Arizona, on Thursday. Gwen Svekis spotted the Ducks a 2-0 lead in the top of the first inning with a two-run home run. Shannon Rhodes added a two-run blast in the sixth inning as part of a 2-for-3, three-RBI day. Svekis finished with three hits and three RBIs. Junior ace Megan Kleist picked up the win for Oregon, allowing three runs and striking out six in six-plus innings. The Ducks resume their stay at the Kajikawa Classic with games against Fresno State (8 a.m.) and Cal State Northridge (1 p.m.) on Friday.

U.S. Olympic team coach accused of sexual abuse — World champion swimmer Ariana Kukors has accused an U.S. Olympic team coach of sexually abusing her starting when she was 16, the latest misconduct allegations against those charged with caring for young athletes. It is another scandal for the U.S. governing body of swimming and for the sports world, which was rocked by a litany of sexual misconduct by former USA Gymnastics sports doctor Larry Nassar. For its part, USA Swimming revealed in 2010 that sex abuse allegations were mostly to blame for lifetime bans of 46 members and said it set up training and enhanced screening for all coaches, officials and volunteers. That s ame year, coach Sean Hutchison faced an investigation over his ties to Kukors, but it was closed with no misconduct found. USA Swimming said Thursday that it learned of the underage abuse allegations this week. Kukors, now 28, told authorities that Hutchison took thousands of sexually explicit photographs of her, according to a search warrant document filed by a federal agent. She told officers that he kissed and touched her when she was 16 and engaged in sexual activity with her when she was 17 at the Pan Pacific Swimming Championships in Victoria, British Columbia, the document said. Hutchison denies abusing Kukors and has not been charged with a crime.

Son of former Blazers coach killed in accident — Richard “R.J.” Adelman, the son of former Portland Trail Blazers player and coach Rick Adelman, was killed in an auto-pedestrian accident in downtown Houston. Police say 44-year-old was not using a crosswalk to cross the street when he was struck and killed Feb. 2 by a minivan. No charges were filed against the driver. Adelman had been an assistant on his father’s staff when the elder Adelman coached the Houston Rockets from 2007-11. He also was player personnel director for the Minnesota Timberwolves when his father coached there, and worked on staffs in Sacramento, Seattle and Portland. Adelman grew up in Oregon, where his father coached the Portland Trail Blazers to the NBA Finals. He helped Willamette University win the 1993 NAIA Division II national championship and later earned a law degree at the University of Oregon in 2001.

Tie atop leaderboard at Pebble Beach — Kevin Streelman and PGA Tour rookie Beau Hossler each had a 7-under 65 on different golf courses in the same splendid weather and shared the lead after one round of the AT&T Pebble Beach National Pro-Am. Dustin Johnson shot a 67 at Spyglass Hill without any stress Thursday. Rory McIlroy made his tournament debut with a scrappy finish to salvage a 68. McIlroy played alongside Phil Mickelson, who shot 31 on the back nine at Spyglass for a 69. Warm, sun and virtually no wind made for ideal scoring conditions. Among those who could not take advantage was defending champion Jordan Spieth. He made one birdie, one bogey and 16 pars at Spyglass.
