Bend High has a second straight Intermountain Conference girls swimming championship in its sights, while the Mountain View boys look to break up a potential sweep by the Lava Bears.

Emily Brockman, a two-time Class 5A state champion in the girls 100-yard breaststroke and the defending state champ in the 200 individual medley, took first in both of those events Friday night during the IMC preliminaries at Juniper Swim & Fitness Center. Brockman and Hailey Hyde, who was first in the 100- and 200-yard freestyles, helped the defending state champion Lava Bears claim the top times in six of the eight individual races.

A year after leading Mountain View to second place at the boys state meet, Griffin McKean, the reigning state champ in the 100 breaststroke, took first Friday in the breast and the 200 freestyle.

Christopher Davami posted the top time in the 500 free for Mountain View, but Bend, which has won two of the past four district titles, also posted top finishes in three events, including two by Kurt Felder (200 IM, 100 butterfly).

Ani Husaby was first in the girls 100 fly and the 100 backstroke for Summit, which has won 14 district championships in the past 16 years. Ridgeview’s Ben Hucke, a boys state qualifier in the 100 free last year, posted the top time in the event Friday and also took first in the 50 freestyle.

The finals will take place Saturday, with action expected to begin at noon. Winners in each individual and relay race automatically qualify for the Class 5A state meet, which is scheduled for Feb. 16-17 at Mt. Hood Community College in Gresham. The remaining open lanes will be filled by the next-fastest times from each of the five districts throughout the state.

Madras, in 4A/3A/2A/1A Special District 2, and Sisters, in 4A/3A/2A/1A Special District 3, were also participating in the first day of districts Friday, and those meets will conclude Saturday.
