- Ducks and Beavers
SOFTBALL
Ducks score pair of shutouts — Fifth-ranked Oregon closed out the Mary Nutter Classic on Sunday with two shutout wins, starting with a 4-0 victory over No. 7 LSU on a two-hitter by Miranda Elish. D.J. Sanders smacked her seventh home run of the season, a two-run shot, and Gwen Svekis hit a two-run single to power the offense for the Ducks. Later, Oregon beat San Jose State 1-0 behind 5 1/3 innings of three-hit pitching by Megan Kleist. Elish got the final two outs to earn the save in a game that lasted just six innings because of a two-hour time limit. Oregon (12-3) next plays a series of games in Florida, starting Thursday with two games against South Florida in Tampa.
Pitching gem carries Beavers — Freshman Mariah Mazon spun a one-hit shutout Sunday, leading Oregon State to a 4-0 win over Long Island University Brooklyn on the final day of the Mary Nutter Classic in Cathedral City, California. Mazon, who struck out four, retired the first 10 batters she faced and did not allow a hit until a bloop single by Kiana Cisneros in the top of the sixth inning. Mazon also hit a two-run single in the third inning that put OSU up 3-0. McKenna Arriola had two hits for the Beavers (10-6), who return to action Friday with games against Colorado State and Minnesota in the San Diego Classic.
BASEBALL
Beavers go unbeaten in Arizona — Grant Gambrell struck out 12 and Trevor Larnach had three hits and two RBIs Sunday to lead No. 2 Oregon State to a 6-1 victory over Ohio State in Surprise, Arizona. The win concluded a perfect 8-0 trip to Arizona to open the season for the Beavers. Gambrell, a sophomore, scattered five hits — all singles — over seven innings and did not walk a batter in recording his first win of the year. Cadyn Grenier had two of the Beavers’ 10 hits and joined Larnach and Steven Kwan with two RBIs apiece as Oregon State beat the Buckeyes for the second time in three days. The Beavers play their home opener Friday night against Hartford.
Ducks rally to beat LMU — Down 4-0 after five innings, Oregon scored four runs in the sixth inning and four more in the seventh, then held on for a 9-7 win over Loyola Marymount on Sunday in Los Angeles. Ryne Nelson had three of the Ducks’ 10 hits, and Oregon capitalized on nine walks and four hit batsmen to win the three-game series. Parker Kelly, the fourth of six UO pitchers, worked a scoreless inning to improve to 3-0, and Nelson got the final two outs to earn the save. Oregon committed three errors, contributing to four unearned runs by the Lions. The Ducks host Seattle in their home opener on Tuesday night.
BASKETBALL
No. 16 Stanford women at Washington St. canceled — The women’s basketball game between No. 16 Stanford and Washington State scheduled for Sunday was canceled after the death of the Cougars’ director of strength and conditioning David Lang. Lang, a longtime member of the athletics department, worked directly with the women’s basketball and men’s and women’s golf programs. Stanford (20-9, 14-3) entered the day a game behind No. 8 Oregon for the Pac-12 Conference championship. The Ducks clinched their first regular-season title in 18 years with a 74-61 victory over Arizona, which is 11th in the conference, on Sunday. Washington State (10-19, 3-14) is locked into the No. 10 seed for the Pac-12 Tournament, which begins on Wednesday.
