Pimps of Joytime get happy at Volcanic

Brooklyn’s Pimps of Joytime has been bringing its “janxta funk” (a portmanteau of “janky” and “gangsta,” as bandleader Brian Jay told GO! Magazine in 2013) to Bend venues such as Liquid Lounge and 4 Peaks Music Festival for almost a decade now, rarely missing a year since 2009. The band has found a home at Volcanic Theatre Pub in recent years, and returns for the third year in a row Saturday. This time out the band will play two sets in support of its fourth studio album, “The Third Wall Chronicles,” a whirlwind mix of old and new styles, switching deftly between the hip-hop swagger that anchors the beats and permeates the vocals of Jay, Mayteana Morales and Kimberly Dawson, and instrumental foundations that sound airlifted in from 1970-something. Funk fans and music fans in general (and there’s obviously a lot of you guys in Bend), listen up.

Pimps of Joytime: 9 p.m. Saturday; $18 plus fees in advance, $20 at the door; Volcanic Theatre Pub, 70 SW Century Drive, Bend; volcanictheatrepub.com or 541-323-1881.
