Construction and operation of Facebook data centers in four sites around the United States, including Prineville, generates $835 million per year in multiplier effects for local economies, according to a report released Thursday.
The report prepared for Facebook by RTI International, of North Carolina, stated that spending by the social media giant supports 8,600 jobs each year. The cumulative effect of Facebook spending has added $5.8 billion to the U.S. gross domestic product, the sum of all goods and services, between 2010 and 2015.
The report did not break out economic data for individual sites, but a public relations firm working for Facebook in December said the Prineville site supports about 200 people working full time, most of whom live in Prineville. Not all 200 are employed by Facebook directly. Some work for third-party contractors in security, cleaning and culinary services.
Facebook has invested more than $1 billion in its Prineville campus, according to Weinstein PR, of Portland. The company in December announced construction of two new buildings over the next four years.
Facebook operates data centers in Fort Worth, Texas; Altoona, Iowa; and Forest City, North Carolina. Facebook investments contribute most to the construction, wholesale trade and real estate sectors, the RTI report stated.
